When Rory Kerins came to the Calgary Flames organization, he was an overflow prospect who spent time in the ECHL and had to work for his playing time in the AHL. Five years later, he is an AHL All-Star with NHL experience and one of the Wranglers’ best. At the level Kerins is playing at now, he has broken Wranglers franchise records and most recently tied Jakob Pelletier and Matthew Phillips with his 11-game point streak.
Rory Kerins hit this milestone on Friday, Jan 2, when he scored the opening goal of the game in Calgary’s 5-2 loss against the Tucson Roadrunners. Kerins had an outstanding month of December points wise and started his point streak on Dec. 9. His linemates, William Stromgren and Dryden Hunt also found a lot of success during this month of play and Kerins finished that run of points with 14 points over that stretch, consisting of six goals and eight assists. His scoring streak was snapped on Sunday, Jan. 4, when the Wranglers were shut out by Tucson.
Wranglers Head Coach Brett Sutter commented on Kerins’ point streak after Friday’s game and said:
“You know what? He’s a good pro. He’s a good teammate. He’s always working on his game. He’s always working to get better. He wants to know what he can do to take his game to that next level. So he’s getting awarded for all the hard work he’s done and he puts the time in. Good on him.”
Kerins was a sixth-round draft pick by the Flames in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft and made a brief four game appearance with the Stockton Heat in the 2020-21 season. He finished up his OHL career with the Soo Greyhounds, then played his first professional season mostly in the ECHL with the Rapid City Rush. He was around for the Wranglers’ inaugural season in 2022-23, but only played in six games. In his time in the ECHL that season, he played 38 games and put up 17 goals and 20 assists for a total of 37 points.
In 2023-24, Rory Kerins graduated from the ECHL and played the majority of the season with the Wranglers, but was towards the bottom of the lineup and sometimes the odd man out. He was scratched for some games but still managed to play in 54 games, where he put up 16 goals and 16 assists.
The 2024-25 season last year was his big breakout season that put him among the AHL’s best and earned him his first NHL minutes. As one of the most unprecedented underdogs the Flames’ affiliation has seen in many years, Kerins played himself to the top of the lineup very early in the year and was recognized as one of the team’s AHL All-Stars. He finished up the regular season with 63 games played and nearly a point per game with 33 goals and 28 assists. Kerins made his NHL debut with the Flames in the same season and kept his scoring pace with four assists in five games.
This season, Kerins got a two game look with the Flames back in mid-November but did not put up any points. He is still on the hunt for his first goal at the NHL level. He has since returned to the Wranglers and continues to be a leader and impactful player. At this point in the season, he sits at 33 points in as many games with 13 goals and 20 assists.
The road for Rory was not linear but his development and hard work has finally paid off. He has been able to keep his consistency and prove that last season wasn’t just a fluke. This record is not even the first he’s approached this season either. Back on Oct. 18, he officially broke the all-time scoring record in total points for the Wranglers with 98. Kerins has now separated himself from the pack further as he sits at 128 total. Kerins passed the goal record last season, previously held by Adam Klapka and is fourth in the all-time assists category for the team.
Wranglers Captain Clark Bishop, who played alongside Phillips, Pelletier and Kerins when he first came in, spoke about Kerins’ journey and said:
“It’s really special to see someone come from the East Coast and work their way up like this and you know, get noticed last year, get some NHL games. He’s doing really well for himself and we’re all happy for him. Can’t say enough good about him.”
With All-Star selections coming sometime this month, the conversation around him being a back-to-back representative for the Wranglers is not out of the question by any means. As this record will stay as a tie for now, the effort that went into it and the level of play he is maintaining will continue to be celebrated.
