What might the Maple Leafs have to offer for Rasmus Andersson?

Rasmus Andersson’s name is in trade rumours… again.
In the summer, around the 2025 draft, the right-shot defenceman’s name was linked to both the Los Angeles Kings and Vegas Golden Knights. Before the season even began, it seemed likely that Andersson would be on a new team come the trade deadline.
It’s only been amplified thanks to the Flames’ 5-12-3 start. Their 13 points are the fewest in the league, and it’s not “early” in the season anymore, as they’ve played 20 games. With the trade deadline still well in the distance, trade rumours are only going to increase.
In recent times, Andersson has been linked to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Last Thursday on The Leafs Nation’s Leafs Morning Take, Jay Rosehill noted that the Leafs are “actively pursuing” Andersson.
The fit is certainly there for the Leafs. Their defence has been less than ideal this season, and with Chris Tanev’s recent injury, the right side of their defence core is barren. Not only is Tanev out, but so too is Brandon Carlo, leaving Oliver Ekman-Larsson as their top defence on the right side, playing on his off-hand.
While Andersson would fit like a glove on the Leafs, the biggest issue is being able to offer enough for the Flames to bite. In terms of draft picks, their only available picks in the 2026 draft are their third, their fifth, and the San Jose Sharks’ sixth. Their 2027 first-rounder was traded away for Scott Laughton, but they have their 2027 second-round pick.
Andersson will surely fetch more than a second-round pick, given his ability and cap hit, it wouldn’t be surprising if he lands a first. The Leafs’ next first-round pick is in the 2028 draft, and it’s unclear if they’re willing to part with it.
In terms of prospect capital, it’s an area where the Leafs are lacking. Easton Cowan’s their best prospect and so far in his National Hockey League career, the 20-year-old has a goal and four points in 11 games. He’s undoubtedly a solid prospect, but it seems unlikely the Leafs would want to part with him.
Their other prospect of note is 2024 first-round pick Ben Danford, a right-shot defenceman currently playing in the Ontario Hockey League. Prospects like Cowan and Danford rarely get moved, especially for a rental.
While Andersson would be a fit for the Leafs, they just don’t have the assets to pull it off, especially since they’d likely be unwilling to move their 2028 first-round pick. The Flames could shop Andersson elsewhere and get a better package.
It’ll be interesting to see how the Flames handle the following months heading into the trade deadline. If they continue to struggle, they could dictate the selling market.
