Calgary Wranglers goaltender Devin Cooley has been named the recipient of the American Hockey League’s player of the week award for the period ending November 10, the league announced Monday morning.
Cooley, 27, made four appearances with the Wranglers last week, posting two shutouts and allowing just two goals in total on 83 shots faced against the Bakersfield Condors and Henderson Silver Knights. The Los Gatos, California product currently boasts a remarkable .954 save percentage to go along with an 8-2-0 record and three shutouts in 11 games with the Wranglers this season.
In Cooley’s excellent stretch of games against Bakersfield and Henderson between November 4 and 10, he went 2-1-0 with a .976 save percentage and a 0.64 goals-against average. Fuelled in large part by his terrific performance, the Wranglers currently lead the entire AHL with a 11-3-0 record and 22 points in 14 games.
Cooley is the first Wranglers player to win the AHL’s player of the week award — sponsored by the Howies Hockey Tape company — since the middle of October, when Rory Kerins was recognized for scoring five goals over a three-game stretch.
The Flames signed Cooley to a two-year contract as an unrestricted free agent from the San Jose Sharks on July 1. The 6’5″ goaltender is currently on a two-way deal with the Flames organization that will convert into a one-way deal at the league minimum salary for the 2025-26 campaign.
An undrafted player, Cooley turned pro in the Nashville Predators organization in 2020 upon the conclusion of his three-year run at the University of Denver. After splitting his first two professional seasons between the AHL and ECHL, Cooley cemented himself as a solid backup to the likes of Yaroslav Askarov and Devon Levi in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 campaigns before being acquired by the Sharks and given his first six NHL starts this past spring.
Cooley has never appeared in more than 27 games in a single season dating back to his junior career, but he’s on pace to surpass that mark and then some this year. With Dan Vladar potentially on his way out as a pending unrestricted free agent, Cooley projects to be next in line to serve as Dustin Wolf’s tandem partner with the Flames.
Keep an eye out for a more in-depth look at Cooley’s career and his eye-popping numbers so far this season to drop right here on FlamesNation on Tuesday morning.
