The Calgary Flames defeated the Minnesota Wild 7–3 on Saturday night in a game that had a little bit of everything.
For Flames forward @Blake Coleman, the second period of Saturday’s contest featured multiple shorthanded breakaways … on the same shift … in the final minute of play.
With @Andrew Mangiapane in the penalty box serving a holding penalty, Coleman managed to find a bit of open ice behind Minnesota’s defence and sped toward Wild goaltender @Kaapo Kahkonen.
Before Coleman was able to get a shot off, backchecking Wild forward @Kevin Fiala managed to negate the scoring chance with a well-timed stick lift. Fiala then led the rush the other way.
Coleman had fallen to the ice after Fiala’s good defensive play and was the last man back the other way. As it so happened, Coleman was also in perfect position for yet another breakaway when Wild defenceman @Alex Goligoski fumbled the puck in the offensive zone.
Flames forward @Elias Lindholm managed to chip the puck to a wide-open Coleman in the neutral zone. Despite being almost completely out of gas and with @Joel Eriksson Ek in pursuit, Coleman managed to snap the puck between Kahkonen’s legs for a shorthanded goal.
Coleman’s 11th goal of the season was also his first shorthanded goal as a Flame and came at the 19:19 mark of the second period. Lindholm picked up the lone assist on the tally.
@Tyler Toffoli and @Matthew Tkachuk both scored twice in the game for Calgary, which also received goals from Mangiapane and @Erik Gudbranson. With the 7–3 decision, the Flames extended their winning streak at the Scotiabank Saddledome to a franchise record-tying 11 games.
The Flames will return to action against the very same Wild at the Xcel Energy Center on Mar. 1.
