The Calgary Flames have made their fifth pick of the 2024 NHL Draft. At 74th overall, the Flames have chosen defenceman Henry Mews from the Ontario Hockey League’s Ottawa 67’s.
An Ottawa kid, Mews is a right shot blueliner listed at 6’0″ and 185 pounds. He played his second full season in the OHL in 2023-24, posting 15 goals and 61 points in 65 games. He also represented Canada at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup and the Under-18 World Championships, capturing gold at each event.
Here’s what Daily Faceoff’s Steven Ellis had to say about Mews – he had him ranked 38th in his final list:
I love Mews’ offensive abilities, and he put them on full display at the U-18s. Defensively, I feel like he was physical, cut off angles well and did a good job of keeping the puck in the zone in all situations. Mews made some smart decisions with the puck and was the team’s top power-play quarterback, a role I expect him to thrive in once he’s an NHLer. The decision-making with the puck still needs to work, even if I felt it was a bit more refined here.
Mews was the 37th-ranked North American skater on the NHL Central Scouting Service’s final list. Over at Elite Prospects, they had him ranked 53rd overall in their draft guide.
Mews has represented Canada several times internationally and been lauded as one of his age group’s top players during those events. He’s got a lot of upside and on paper it looks like he slots in well alongside the likes of Zayne Parekh, Hunter Brzustewicz, Jeremie Poirier and Etienne Morin in the Flames’ system.
