Calgary Flames defenceman Chris Tanev missed four of his team’s 12 games during the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs, and we now know why.
According to a report by Vancouver hockey insider Rick Dhaliwal, Tanev played through a torn labrum, a separated shoulder, and a sprained neck in Games 4 and 5 of the Flames’ series against the Edmonton Oilers in the second round.
Tanev, 32, appeared in all 82 of the Flames’ games during the 2021–22 regular season. The four games he missed during the playoffs were his first absences from the Flames’ lineup since joining the team in 2020.
After winning Game 1 on Scotiabank Saddledome ice, the Flames lost the next four to end their season. Tanev logged 19:24 (and picked up an assist) in Game 4 at Rogers Arena before playing 22:08 in Game 5.
Tanev spent the first 10 seasons of his National Hockey League career with the Vancouver Canucks before signing a four-year deal with the Flames prior to the 2020–21 season. He scored a career-high 28 points (six goals, 22 assists) in 2021–22.
Dhaliwal added that Tanev will have surgery next week to address his injuries. The 6’2″, 197-lb right-handed defenceman has two seasons remaining on his contract with the Flames.
