With Kris Versteeg missing practice, it seems that someone might be coming up through the pipeline soon. Exciting times.

If you’re wondering just how good Dube is, here’s Glen Gulutzan, Johnny Gaudreau, and Sean Monahan singing his praises during media availability. I knew he was a later cut than expected, but to hear that he had a very good shot at actually playing in the NHL? That’s quite the endorsement (though I’m skeptical of the praise given that they gave a LW spot to Tanner effing Glass).

Fischer is settling in nicely with Spokane, having scored 15 points in 14 games since getting traded. Surely an early boast to make, but he’s currently outscoring Oilers first round pick Kailer Yamamoto. Still a fan of punching, by the way.

Schneider was at his best and worst this weekend. In his first game, he allowed seven goals on 28 shots (0.750) and then stopped 24 of 25 (0.960).

Call-up conundrum

As the title/intro details, Versteeg’s unknown status and absence from the past practice and game suggests an injury. With an extra spot and no real compelling options to go in (Lazar or Freddie?), the Flames have a chance to get a minor leaguer some minutes. I’m going to run down some of the names and what I think the probability is of them coming up:

Morgan Klimchuk: The 2013 first rounder has become one of the more intriguing prospects from that class, something no one would believe if you said that three years ago. He’s rounding out nicely in the AHL after a slow start, and he appears to be suited best for a bottom six winger spot. Given that the Flames haven’t really seen what he is, I feel he could get a shot.

Garnet Hathaway: The checking forward has become a large part of Stockton’s offence, scoring over a point per game, but I feel that’s not enough to get it done. The Flames know what they have in Hathaway, which is an energy guy who can provide an occasional spark and not much else. Given that they need to replace Versteeg, that’s not helpful. Being right-handed also hurts his case.

Marek Hrivik: I don’t track him in this column, but the Czech UFA signing has plenty to offer the Flames. Since returning from a training camp injury, Hrivik has torn up the AHL with his strong two-way play, something that has been his calling card since coming over. He’s a left-handed shot with NHL experience, who could prove that he belongs if he gets an opportunity. Pretty equal chance with Klimchuk, I’d say.

Andrew Mangiapane: Maybe one of the most exciting Flames prospects, Mangiapane’s results so far this year (minus this week) scream that he’s a guy who just needs an NHL shot to be successful. Perhaps he gets it and works his way up to the struggling third line. Although, given that Versteeg is not likely out long term (we’d hear about that if it was the case), I think the Flames keep Mangiapane tucked away for a rainy day. He probably isn’t suited to be playing with Brouwer and Stajan/Lazar/F. Ham anyways.

Emile Poirier: It’s a pretty good story, and since he’s hot right now, why not? Poirier turned some heads at camp and was in contention for a RW spot before being waived and sent down. He hasn’t seen the NHL in about two years, so like Mangiapane, he could just be a shot away from making the team. Again, I think handedness plays big into this and he stays down for now. Why mess with what’s working?

Hunter Shinkaruk: The guy has been struggling for a while, but he’s a big name that could use some confidence. The Flames recalled him last year in the wake of a Versteeg injury and he was pretty okay. They probably would like to figure out what Shinkaruk is sooner rather than later, so he’s the dark horse of the bunch. Don’t think it’s happening though.
