FlamesNation Prospect Update: Got a Gawdin
The Flames added a pretty safe player from the UFA pool, got some secondary scoring in Stockton, and also saw some pretty stellar goaltending performances. Lots of good stuff coming ahead.
In case you missed it
- Here’s last week’s update.
- Stockton’s Finest gives you a weekend update on the Stockton Heat and their sweep of the Battle of (AHL) Alberta.
- If the title and introduction didn’t give it away, the Flames signed training camp standout Glenn Gawdin.
- A look at which Flames prospects could represent their nation in the upcoming Olympics.
Rasmus Andersson – D, Stockton Heat, AHL

Andersson played his first two AHL games in about two weeks, notching an assist.
Austin Carroll – RW, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe

Around Stockton in some capacity.
Dillon Dube – C/LW, Kelowna Rockets, WHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 19 | 12 | 14 | 26 | 14 | 19 | 11 | 32.54 |
Change from last week | 2 | 4 | 1 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 3.16 |
Dube had himself a week, scoring four goals and adding another assist. All primary, all at 5v5.
He is going to be something good soon.
Zach Fischer – RW, Spokane Chiefs, WHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 14 | 7 | 5 | 12 | 6 | 5 | 5 | 20.38 |
Change from last week | 2 | 2 | 1 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2.54 |
Fischer has had his best week yet, scoring two goals and adding another assist in two games.
Spencer Foo – RW, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 14 | 1 | 4 | 5 | 3 | 4 | 2 | 13.76 |
Change from last week | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -1.06 |
Foo was healthy scratched for the first time this season. Maybe it helps with his struggles. Again, not going to be shooting 3% forever.
Adam Fox – D, Harvard Crimson, ECAC
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 7 | 0 | 7 | 7 | 2 | 2 | 0 | 18.86 |
Change from last week | 2 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | -3.77 |
Harvard is struggling, stumbling out of the gate with a 2-5-0 record -they were outshot 50-16 by Minnesota on Saturday- and Fox is getting tangled up in the mess. His seven assists means he has been involved in just under 50% of goals scored by Harvard this year.
Glenn Gawdin – C/RW, Swift Current Broncos, WHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 21 | 15 | 28 | 43 | 24 | 32 | 16 | 48.69 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
I’ll have a bit of background on newest Flame Gawdin later, but for now, you’ll be pleased to know that he scored a goal this weekend.
Josh Healey – D, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 10 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |

Played a game of hockey this weekend.
D’Artagnan Joly – RW, Baie-Comeau Drakkar, QMJHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 13 | 5 | 7 | 12 | 7 | 11 | 7 | 18.92 |
Change from last week | 2 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -1.58 |
Joly finally added a non-primary point, a noise assist on a powerplay goal.
Pavel Karnaukhov – LW/C, CSKA Moscow, KHL/Zvezda, VHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
KHL current | 6 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 23.02 |
Change from last week | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
VHL current | 17 | 7 | 10 | 17 | 12 | 13 | 8 | 37.84 |
Change from last week | 3 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1.49 |
Karnaukhov continues to surprise. I thought he would be back in the KHL after the international break, but they appear to be content to leave him down in the VHL.
Morgan Klimchuk – LW, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 15 | 7 | 4 | 11 | 7 | 10 | 7 | 28.26 |
Change from last week | 2 | 2 | 0 | 2 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 1.58 |
Klimchuk continues to produce, beginning and ending the weekend series against Bakersfield with goals.
Oliver Kylington – D, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 15 | 1 | 7 | 8 | 6 | 4 | 4 | 20.55 |
Change from last week | 2 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -0.2 |
For the first time in what feels like forever, Kylington registered a point. Sure, a secondary assist on a non-5v5 goal, but we can let him have this one.
Linus Lindstrom – C/LW, Skelleftea AIK, SHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 19 | 2 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 5.01 |
Change from last week | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -0.94 |
He may not be scoring, but Lindstrom is doing a lot of things right. He’s starting to see 13-14 minutes of ice time, which is a considerable bump from the 9-10 he saw earlier in the year.
Ryan Lomberg – LW, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 15 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 3 | 2 | 2 | 7.71 |
Change from last week | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1.78 |
Lomberg’s back on the up-and-up, having scored his first goal of the season after breaking a long drought last week.
Andrew Mangiapane – LW/C, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 15 | 8 | 13 | 21 | 14 | 15 | 11 | 53.96 |
Change from last week | 2 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 2 | 1 | -2.37 |
Another week, another great effort by Mangiapane. Two more points, both primary.
Mitchell Mattson – C/LW, Sioux Falls Stampede, USHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 15 | 5 | 3 | 8 | 7 | 6 | 5 | 12.25 |
Change from last week | 2 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 1.65 |
Mattson is finding a rhythm, having added goals in each of the past three weeks. Also, if you didn’t see it, his goaltender scored a goal. I’m just sharing because I think it’s neat:
Adam Ollas Mattsson – D, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 9 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Change from last week | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
AOM has (unsurprisingly) not blown the doors off in the AHL, but at least he’s finding his place in Stockton’s roster.
Matthew Phillips – C/RW, Victoria Royals, WHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 24 | 18 | 23 | 41 | 18 | 29 | 12 | 40.62 |
Change from last week | 3 | 3 | 1 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 4 | -1.28 |
If you’re at all concerned about Phillips not having a contract, listen to the wise words of Ryan:
Anyways, four points this week, all 5v5, all primary. Check out this sweet goal:
Emile Poirier – LW/RW, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 14 | 1 | 7 | 8 | 5 | 6 | 3 | 22.02 |
Change from last week | 2 | 0 | 5 | 5 | 2 | 5 | 2 | 12.38 |
Poirier had a great week, picking up five primary assists in two games after being bumped up to the second line. We’ll have to see if this is the real McCoy, but it’s a promising sign from a kid who looked to be moving backwards.
Brett Pollock – LW/C, Stockton Heat, AHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Change from last week | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Played a game.
Daniel Pribyl – RW/C, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Still injured.
Rushan Rafikov – D, Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, KHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 32 | 1 | 7 | 8 | 8 | 4 | 4 | 15.17 |
Change from last week | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -1.57 |
Played in three games.
Adam Ruzicka – C/LW, Sarnia Sting, OHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 23 | 16 | 17 | 33 | 12 | 25 | 8 | 35.30 |
Change from last week | 3 | 2 | 0 | 2 | 1 | 2 | 1 | -2.83 |
Two goals this week, including the OT winner against Guelph. Like Phillips, he’s starting to become less reliant on PP and secondary scoring, which are good signs.
Hunter Shinkaruk – F, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 14 | 5 | 2 | 7 | 2 | 6 | 2 | 19.27 |
Change from last week | 2 | 2 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 3.21 |
Shinkaruk has found success on special teams, adding a PP and SH goal this week.
Hopefully he can stitch together the rest of his game in short time.
Hunter Smith – RW, Kansas City Mavericks, ECHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 14 | 4 | 4 | 8 | 8 | 8 | 8 | 13.12 |
Change from last week | 5 | 3 | 2 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5.47 |
Smith is starting to play lights out hockey for the Mavericks, which I guess is better than nothing.
Filip Sveningsson – LW, HV71, Superelit/SHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
SHL current | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |

Superelit current | 12 | 7 | 7 | 14 | 8 | 11 | 5 | 19.13 |
Change from last week | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Probably got abducted by aliens or something. Hasn’t done anything in a month.
Eetu Tuulola – RW, HPK, SM-Liiga
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 19 | 6 | 0 | 6 | 3 | 6 | 3 | 11.13 |
Change from last week | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -1.31 |
Snapped an impressive goal-per-game streak on his return from international break.
Juuso Valimaki – D, Tri-City Americans, WHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 16 | 5 | 12 | 17 | 8 | 12 | 8 | 25.27 |
Change from last week | 2 | 1 | 4 | 5 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 4.89 |
Another guy who had A Week, Valimaki added four points in two games (one of the points was a stat correction from the previous week).
Tyler Wotherspoon – D, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 13 | 1 | 8 | 9 | 5 | 5 | 4 | 25.69 |
Change from last week | 2 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -0.99 |
Just one assist for Wotherspoon this week.
Jon Gillies – G, Stockton Heat
GP | TOI | SV% | SA | |
Current | 9 | 540.18 | 0.921 | 280 |
Change from last week | 1 | 60 | 0.003 | 37 |
After his unexpected journey to the NHL, Jon Gillies is back in Stockton shutting the door. He stopped 35 of 37 (0.946) this past weekend.
Mason McDonald – G, Kansas City Mavericks, ECHL
GP | TOI | SV% | SA | |
Current | 6 | 306 | 0.885 | 139 |
Change from last week | 1 | 60 | 0.013 | 22 |
McDonald only played in one of Kansas City’s five (the ECHL is nuts) games this week. He posted a near shutout, stopping 21 of 22 (0.955) against Quad City.
Tyler Parsons – G, Kansas City Mavericks
GP | TOI | SV% | SA | |
Current | 11 | 565 | 0.9 | 339 |
Change from last week | 4 | 207 | 0.03 | 123 |
Parsons returned from a lingering illness, clearly showing that his previous results were not an accurate reflection of him. He came back to save 135 of 141 shots (0.957 SV%) and post a shutout. He was named the ECHL’s goalie of the week for his efforts. Let’s hope this continues.
David Rittich – G, Stockton Heat
GP | TOI | SV% | SA | |
Current | 6 | 359.7 | 0.931 | 188 |
Change from last week | 1 | 59.82 | 0.003 | 35 |
Rittich also had a decent game, saving 33 of 35 (0.943 SV%) in his start this weekend.
Nick Schneider – G, Calgary Hitmen, WHL
GP | TOI | SV% | SA | |
Current | 20 | 1149 | 0.892 | 622 |
Change from last week | 4 | 249 | -0.006 | 122 |
Schneider’s struggles continued this weekend, as he posted three sub-.900 games. The other one saw him stop 24 of 25.
A few words on Glenn Gawdin
Gawdin has had a great season so far for Swift Current. He’s clearly a strong contributor for the Broncos, having his name attached to 43 of the 87 total goals they’ve scored this season (32 of those being primary points), in addition to 24 of 54 5v5 points (16 primary points there).
Of course, there are some red flags. Gawdin is in his fifth WHL season, already picked by the Blues in 2015 and returned to the draft pool for some underperforming years when he slightly improved on his draft and draft+1 years, but not so much to warrant at least a contract. Those concerns might be overstated, as Prospect-Stats has his 2015-16 and 2016-17 production mostly around first line, but you shouldn’t really be expecting much anyways.
He’s also playing on a line with Tyler Steenbergen and Aleksi Heponiemi, two undervalued studs in their own right. His numbers don’t suggest Gawdin is a passenger on this line, but the age advantage he has on the other two (2017 picks) can’t be ignored.
Overall, I think signing Gawdin was a pretty smart bet that could definitely pay off for the team. It’s a long shot, but given the numbers, both career and season, he seems to be a guy with middle six upside.
