FlamesNation Prospect Update: Trade deadline survivors
Despite furious armchair GMing, the Flames prospects escaped the trade deadline without any losses. Well, besides the yet to be named 16-year-old Finnish kid the Senators will draft. We’ll miss him.
In case you missed it
- Here’s the last update, guest hosted by Ryan.
- We opened the floor to ask how the Flames should handle Jon Gillies while he’s here.
- Morgan Klimchuk went back down to Stockton.
- And Andrew Mangiapane came back up (along with Tanner Glass, but eh) and then went back down again…
- … with Jon Gillies and David Rittich, but those two were only paper transactions to keep them eligible for the AHL playoffs.
Rasmus Andersson – D, Stockton Heat, AHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 45 | 7 | 26 | 33 | 21 | 19 | 14 | 28.26 |
Change from last week | 3 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 2 | 2 | 2 | +0.73 |
The Flames didn’t trade Michael Stone at deadline which, barring injuries, keeps Andersson in the AHL for the rest of the year. He’ll presumably score the lights out and just generally be awesome. You feel that making a spot for Ramsus is an offseason priority for the Flames.
Slightly unrelated, but when I went searching for Andersson gifs on Twitter, there were a lot of opposing fans who thought Rasmus would be on their team at 1 p.m. It was cute.
Austin Carroll – RW, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 26 | 5 | 2 | 7 | 7 | 6 | 6 | 10.38 |
Change from last week | 3 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 1 | +2 |
Carroll is heating up at the right time. He’s pretty much in a fight for a second contract at the end of the year, and the honest take is that he’s not a candidate to be qualified. If he does more of these, he could earn another look:
Dillon Dube – C/LW, Kelowna Rockets, WHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 44 | 32 | 35 | 67 | 35 | 51 | 27 | 36.21 |
Change from last week | 3 | 5 | 3 | 8 | 5 | 7 | 5 | +1.99 |
The star system doesn’t really mean much, but Dube went three for three on the first stars this week. That sounds pretty good.
Zach Fischer – RW, Spokane Chiefs, WHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 46 | 22 | 14 | 36 | 25 | 25 | 20 | 18.61 |
Change from last week | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Still injured with a UBI. No timetable for a return.
Spencer Foo – RW, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 48 | 15 | 14 | 29 | 15 | 24 | 11 | 23.28 |
Change from last week | 3 | 2 | 1 | 3 | 2 | 2 | 1 | +1.01 |
Foo has been on fire recently, scoring two goals (one shorthanded) this week. With Mangiapane now down in Stockton for the time being, he’ll have extra help to keep Stockton’s playoff push alive.
Adam Fox – D, Harvard Crimson, ECAC
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 25 | 3 | 17 | 20 | 6 | 9 | 2 | 15.09 |
Change from last week | 2 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -0.49 |
Just an assist this week. He won’t play for two weeks until the ECAC tournament. Harvard is the fourth seed, so they’ll face off either against Dartmouth (5) or St. Lawrence (12). Given that St. Lawrence only won three ECAC games, they’re probably headed home early. Harvard also got trounced by Dartmouth in their two meetings this year, so it’s very likely Harvard is out early. That means Fox could be a Flame as early as March 10. Get excited.
Also, Calder contender Clayton Keller has some praise for Fox:
Glenn Gawdin – C/RW, Swift Current Broncos, WHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 62 | 54 | 62 | 116 | 60 | 88 | 46 | 44.49 |
Change from last week | 3 | 3 | 2 | 5 | 1 | 5 | 1 | -0.25 |
It’s a bit wild that Gawdin can score five points in three games and his NHLe will still go down. He can also fight, if that’s what you’re into.
Josh Healey – D, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 36 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 2.14 |

Played two games of hockey this week.
Jaromir Jagr – RW, Rytiri Kladno, Czech.1

Our oldest prospect suffered a concussion last week after a brutal hit and hasn’t played since.
D’Artagnan Joly – RW, Baie-Comeau Drakkar, QMJHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 47 | 22 | 38 | 60 | 35 | 51 | 31 | 26.17 |
Change from last week | 3 | 5 | 4 | 9 | 6 | 9 | 6 | +2.95 |
Joly won the QMJHL’s player of the week award for scoring a stellar nine points in three games. What’s more impressive is that all of his points were primary, having been the primary factor on about one-third of Drakkar goals. The Flames really might’ve found a diamond in the rough in D’Artagnan (D’iamond?).
Pavel Karnaukhov – LW/C, CSKA Moscow, KHL/Zvezda, VHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
KHL current | 11 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 11.03 |

VHL current | 40 | 14 | 19 | 33 | 21 | 27 | 17 | 25.71 |
Change from last week | 1 | 2 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 | +0.94 |
Karnaukhov’s season is over now, as both the KHL and VHL seasons have wrapped up and playoffs have begun. We’ll have a wrap-up post shortly.
Morgan Klimchuk – LW, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 47 | 16 | 15 | 31 | 19 | 25 | 16 | 25.42 |
Change from last week | 3 | 3 | 1 | 4 | 2 | 4 | 2 | 1.77 |
Klimchuk got a taste of the NHL action and is trying to make sure he can get another. Three goals and an assist for him this weekend.
Oliver Kylington – D, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 44 | 3 | 24 | 27 | 18 | 18 | 13 | 23.65 |
Change from last week | 3 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 1 | +0.15 |
Kylington continues his solid production, adding two more points.
Linus Lindstrom – C/LW, Skelleftea AIK, SHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 36 | 3 | 1 | 4 | 3 | 3 | 2 | 5.44 |
Change from last week | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -0.16 |
Back from Sweden’s Olympic break. Played a game.
Ryan Lomberg – LW, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 38 | 5 | 11 | 16 | 14 | 9 | 8 | 16.22 |
Change from last week | 1 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 1.56 |
Like Klimchuk, Lomberg is certainly itching to get back into the NHL. He had two assists in his one game since being reassigned.
Andrew Mangiapane – LW/C, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 36 | 19 | 23 | 42 | 24 | 31 | 20 | 44.96 |
Change from last week | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | -0.19 |
Mangiapane’s yoyo tour between the NHL and AHL is likely coming to a rest now that he’s been put back in the AHL. It is probably for the best that he is playing somewhere rather than eating popcorn. For what it’s worth, Mangiapane still leads the Heat in scoring despite his numerous absences. He is nine points up on Rasmus Andersson with nine fewer games played, and 11 points up on Klimchuk with 11 fewer games.
Mitchell Mattson – C/LW, Sioux Falls Stampede, USHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 44 | 9 | 11 | 20 | 15 | 18 | 13 | 10.44 |

Two games, no points for Mattson.
Adam Ollas Mattsson – D, Stockton Heat

Matthew Phillips – C/RW, Victoria Royals, WHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 63 | 44 | 56 | 100 | 45 | 74 | 36 | 37.75 |
Change from last week | 2 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -0.84 |
Good and bad news for Phillips. He only registered a noise assist this week and saw his 22-game point streak snapped, but he did hit 100 points for the year, the second Flames prospect to do so.
Emile Poirier – LW/RW, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 48 | 4 | 17 | 21 | 13 | 18 | 11 | 16.86 |
Change from last week | 3 | 0 | 3 | 3 | 2 | 2 | 1 | +1.44 |
A trio of assists for Poirier this week. He is also fighting for another contract, so this looks good for him.
Brett Pollock – LW/C, Stockton Heat, AHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 27 | 5 | 3 | 8 | 5 | 6 | 4 | 11.42 |

Pollock got back onto the scoresheet after weeks of nothing. The guy really shows up in bursts.
Daniel Pribyl – RW/C, Stockton Heat

Injured since December. Will be included with Karnaukhov’s prospect wrap-up.
Adam Ruzicka – C/LW, Sarnia Sting, OHL

A big week for Ruzicka, who busted out of a slump with a nine-point week.
Hunter Shinkaruk – F, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe

Change from last week | 3 | 2 | 1 | 3 | 2 | 3 | 2 | +1.17 |
Shinkaruk is also heating up. He’s one of the RFAs that I think gets another look. He’s not having the greatest season, but he’s looking much better as time passes.
Hunter Smith – RW, Kansas City Mavericks, ECHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe

Smith is recovering from an upper-body injury. He hasn’t played since Jan. 6.
Filip Sveningsson – LW, HV71, Superelit/SHL

Sveningsson returned from the Olympic break to score three points in Superelit top 10 action.
Eetu Tuulola – RW, HPK, SM-Liiga

No games this week for Tuulola.
Juuso Valimaki – D, Tri-City Americans, WHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 32 | 11 | 21 | 32 | 19 | 21 | 13 | 23.78 |
Change from last week | 3 | 4 | 1 | 5 | 5 | 4 | 4 | 1.64 |
Valimaki had a great week, notching a natural hat trick against Prince George.
Tyler Wotherspoon – D, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Current | 49 | 6 | 25 | 31 | 16 | 15 | 9 | 24.38 |
Change from last week | 3 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | -0.75 |
Wotherspoon predictably didn’t get dealt at trade deadline, so this is probably the end of the line for his Flames career. I can’t see him re-signing with the team at the end of year, so he’ll probably end the year in Stockton and then head elsewhere. Shame, as he finally appeared to break out this season.
Jon Gillies – G, Stockton Heat – X
GP | TOI | SV% | SA | |
Current | 31 | 1658.85 | 0.915 | 869 |

Gillies is still up in Calgary.
Mason McDonald – G, Kansas City Mavericks/Stockton Heat
GP | TOI | SV% | SA | |
ECHL Current | 24 | 1358 | 0.892 | 619 |

AHL Current | 4 | 224.35 | 0.875 | 104 |
Change from last week | 2 | 100 | -0.34 | 49 |
McDonald’s AHL stint has gone pretty poorly. He is 3-1 in games played, but received a significant amount of run support from the team in front of him. The dam finally broke this past week, as he allowed 11 goals in five periods of play against the Cleveland Monsters (saved 41/49 total, 0.837 SV%). The team has now turned to Ryan Faragher, a career ECHLer who backstopped the Heat to a victory against the San Diego Gulls.
Tyler Parsons – G, Stockton Heat/Kansas City Mavericks
GP | TOI | SV% | SA | |
ECHL Current | 23 | 1273 | 0.905 | 686 |

Parsons missed both of Stockton’s games due to injury. It’s not expected to be a long-term thing, though.
Nick Schneider – G, Calgary Hitmen, WHL
GP | TOI | SV% | SA | |
Current | 53 | 3009 | 0.885 | 1608 |
