New York Rangers 2021 first-round draft pick Brennan Othmann started the 2025-26 season with his draft organization and by the last third of the season, he was included in a trade to the CalgaryFlames for prospect Jacob Battaglia. His production over the last season took a little bit of a dip and he’s been trying to find a way to be effective at the NHL level so he can stay up. The left shot winger got a fresh start this year and got about a month preview with both the Wranglers and Flames.
What were the expectations for Brennan Othmann in 2025-26?
Othmann entered the season in the last year of his entry level contract and the initial focus was on earning another one. He played in a career high 22 NHL games in 2024-25 and was likely looking to build off that to be close to an everyday NHLer. On the Flames’ side, there weren’t a lot of expectations for Othmann because they didn’t know he’d end up here. Based on his previous performance in earlier years in his career, he would’ve likely been looking to transition fast and work towards a point per game pace.
How did Brennan Othmann perform in 2025-26?
Prior to the trade, Brennan Othmann started the year in the AHL and actually played his first NHL game of the season against the Flames on Oct. 26. He played in 17 games with the New York Rangers and put up one goal in that time. In the AHL, he played with the Hartford Wolf Pack and put up 16 points in 26 games.
Othmann ended up making a nice transition to the Flames organization on both the AHL and NHL sides and made some connections along the way. He and Ryan Strome share an agency and knew each other prior to this year so he mentioned in earlier interviews how it was nice to have that mentorship in the same city. After about a month in Calgary, he had 10 games with the Wranglers and two with the Flames where he had a goal and an assist. He loved his time in Calgary and reiterated that in Wranglers exit interviews. Othmann said:
“I’ve mentioned it a few times now, but I think being back in Canada with a passionate fan base was obviously really cool and being able to see the fans when I was up at the Flames and see how passionate they are. It was great as well, even with the Wranglers too. We had some good turnouts and just knowing how much they love the game and how much they love hockey is something special. Being able to play in front of the crowd and play for the organization is great as well.
Othmann ended up finishing the year with those two games with the Flames and 14 with the Wranglers. In those 14 Wranglers games, he had one goal and six assists. He also made an immediate impression with a fight in his fourth Wranglers game against the Manitoba Moose.
What’s the future outlook for Brennan Othmann?
Brennan Othmann needs a new contract, but played in a way to earn one. He could easily split time between the Flames and Wranglers next year to be a top pick in a call-up scenario while also providing another source of consistent scoring in the AHL lineup. Othmann can be scrappy and holds his own in physical situations. He’s a style of player that Calgary could continue to develop in the direction they’re going. Othmann knows that too. He said:
“You kind of look at the direction that they’re going in and it looks to be a younger direction with a mix of some really good veterans up there. When I was there, the dressing room was great. It was a dressing room that you kind of picture what an NHL dressing room would be and should be. Even the dressing room here is great too with the Wranglers. Like everyone was inclusive, everyone was talkative, everyone was great. I can’t say enough good things about both management for the Wranglers and the Flames. The staff, the players, everyone was great. It feels like how an NHL team should be run.”
Othmann is a 23-year-old restricted free agent as of July 1, and fits right in that age group of some other RFAs in the organization such as Rory Kerins, William Stromgren, Parker Bell and Lucas Ciona. The feeling around Othmann is that the Flames won’t be cutting ties with him any time soon, so his contract extension seems to be a matter of when, not if.
