<p>On the same day that the Canadian national junior team bowed out of the World Juniors in the quarterfinal round, one of the Calgary Flames&#8217; most promising junior prospects received an honour from his home league. Henry Mews was named the Ontario Hockey League&#8217;s top defenceman for the month of December.</p>

<p>A product of the OHL&#8217;s Ottawa 67&#8217;s, Mews was selected by the Flames in the third round, 74th overall, in the 2024 NHL Draft. For those of you keeping track, he was selected with the Flames&#8217; own third-rounder, and he was the fifth player selected by the club in last year&#8217;s draft, following Zayne Parekh (ninth overall), Matvei Gridin (28th overall), Andrew Basha (41st overall) and Jacob Battaglia (62nd overall).</p>

The 6-foot-1, 183lb. defenceman recorded points in 10 of his 11 December contests with the 67’s, highlighted by six multi-point efforts, including a four-assist performance on December 14. Mews currently leads all OHL defencemen in scoring this season with 48 points (11-37-48) in 34 games.</p>
<p>An 18-year-old from Ottawa, Ont., Mews has amassed 140 points (38-102-140) in 154 career OHL regular season games since being selected seventh overall by the 67’s in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection. He has also contributed nine points (3-6-9) in 21 playoff games. Drafted by the Calgary Flames in the third round (74th overall) of the 2024 NHL Draft, Mews has also achieved international success, winning gold with Canada at both the Hlinka Gretzky Cup and the U18 World Junior Championship.</p></blockquote>
<p>All-in-all, Mews has had a really good season so far, with his offensive production accelerating after a slow start. In 12 games combined between September and October, he had zero goals and 11 assists. In November&#8217;s 11 games, he had seven goals and 10 assists for 17 points. As noted, in December, he had four goals and 16 assists for 20 points over 11 games.</p>
<p>Mews&#8217; offensive talents have pushed him to the very top of the OHL&#8217;s scoring race among blueliners. If you&#8217;re generous and go by points-per-game instead, he slips to a close second behind 2024 first-rounder Sam Dickinson. He leads all OHL defencemen outright in power play points – contributing to the 67&#8217;s being the second-best power play in the OHL – and is tied for fifth in even strength points. Whatever way to choose to slice and dice Mews&#8217; numbers this season, he&#8217;s playing really well.</p>
