One RFA down, one more to go.

The Flames have announced that they have re-signed breakout winger Andrew Mangiapane to a one year, two-way contract with a $715K AAV.

The deal is a small “prove it” deal, forfeiting term and money this season in exchange for a likely much higher AAV after Mangiapane gets a full season in the NHL. Although he will still be an RFA at the end of the deal, he will have arbitration rights, which could make his next contract a little bit richer. The AHL salary for the deal has not been announced, though it’s unlikely the Flames will send him down this season, if he even clears waivers in the first place.

Mangiapane, a sixth round pick from the 2015 draft, established himself as an NHLer this year after picking up eight goals and 13 points in a fourth line role for the club. Despite a slow start, he emerged as a capable goalscorer alongside Derek Ryan and Garnet Hathaway on the fourth line, and scored the Flames’ first goal of the playoffs. He figures to see more ice time and become more involved this upcoming season.

The deal is a tidy piece of business for Brad Treliving, who managed to talk the winger down from a rumoured million dollar ask to what his qualifying offer was. The Flames have about $6.34M remaining in cap space, all of which (and potentially more) will go to Matthew Tkachuk.
