Holidays are over, back to work.
In case you missed it:
- Here’s the last update from two weeks ago.
- Your Hitmen report.
- We took a look at our top 20 prospects from this summer and did some rethinking:
- World Juniors is happening, and we’ve been keeping tabs on how Flames prospects are coming along:
- First, looking at the recent Flames flavour to the WJC.
- Day one saw Slovakia (Martin Pospisil, Adam Ruzicka, Milos Roman) lose and Sweden (Filip Sveningsson) win.
- Slovakia and the Flames prospects came back strong against Kazakhstan, though.
- Transaction news!
- Dillon Dube is back!
- Ryan Lomberg (and Buddy Robinson) were here for a quick minute.
- A very quick minute.
Dillon Dube – F, Stockton Heat, AHL – X
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 8 | 1 | 7 | 8 | 5 | 4 | 2 | 39.85 |
Change from last week | 3 | 1 | 3 | 4 | 3 | 3 | 2 | +7.97 |
Before coming up to Calgary, Dube put in a good body of work, picking up four points in three games. Will he stay in Calgary?
Zach Fischer – RW, Kansas City Mavericks, ECHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 19 | 0 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 2 | 2 | 3.63 |
Change from last week | 5 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | +0.35 |
Picked up an assist in KC’s New Year’s Eve game.
Spencer Foo – RW, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 32 | 9 | 7 | 16 | 9 | 12 | 7 | 19.93 |
Change from last week | 6 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 1 | -1.54 |
For reasons we’ll see later, Foo’s window as a feasible NHL prospect is likely closed. If he scored a bit more often, you might wonder if he’s worth a spin, but he’s not even close to the conversation right now.
Glenn Gawdin – C/RW, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 28 | 6 | 6 | 12 | 3 | 12 | 3 | 17.08 |
Change from last week | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -1.21 |
Likely injured. No word on what it is (if it even is an injury, though it would be weird if they were healthy scratching him) or how long he’ll be out.
Josh Healey – D, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 26 | 1 | 4 | 5 | 5 | 3 | 3 | 7.66 |
Change from last week | 4 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -1.4 |
Back from a three-game suspension.
D’Artagnan Joly – RW/C, Rimouski Oceanic
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 34 | 12 | 16 | 28 | 17 | 21 | 13 | 19.18 |
Change from last week | 3 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 1 | -0.35 |
Since we last checked in on Joly, he’s been traded again. After forcing his way out of a toxic situation in Baie-Comeau, he landed with Victoriaville, who promptly flipped him to Rimouski without Joly ever suiting up for the Tigres.
He’s done well so far for his new team, picking up the late game-tying goal for the Oceanic in his first game, and an assist in his third game.
Pavel Karnaukhov – LW/C, CSKA Moscow, KHL/Zvezda, VHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date (KHL) | 19 | 3 | 4 | 7 | 7 | 6 | 6 | 24.29 |
Change from last week | 5 | 2 | 2 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 4 | +6.31 |
Up to date (VHL) | 9 | 4 | 1 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 17.31 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
Don’t look now, but Karnaukhov is actually having a great year in the KHL. He’s struggled to get to Russia’s top league, but now he’s arrived and looking comfortable. I don’t think the Flames will ever sign him – the link was probably severed when he fled the WHL – but his recent strong play is something worth keeping an eye on. The Flames own his rights in perpetuity, so it’s not like there’s a deadline to bring him over.
Demetrious Koumontzis – LW, Arizona State University, NCAA (Independent)
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 22 | 1 | 9 | 10 | 4 | 9 | 3 | 13.46 |
Change from last week | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -1.34 |
Back from break, but no points for Koumontzis.
Oliver Kylington – D, Stockton Heat – X
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 18 | 7 | 7 | 14 | 8 | 10 | 8 | 31 |

Still in Calgary. I’ve been tempted to remove him from this list, but I know as soon as I do he’ll be reassigned to Stockton.
Linus Lindstrom – C/LW, Skelleftea AIK, SHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 26 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 2.46 |
Change from last week | 5 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | +0.96 |
Finally got his second point of the season. Still on the fourth line, though.
Ryan Lomberg – LW, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 22 | 3 | 4 | 7 | 5 | 5 | 3 | 12.68 |
Change from last week | 3 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | +0.1 |
With Calgary healing up, he’s probably in Stockton for the long term. Picking up a key goal in a comeback effort against San Jose probably helps his case to come back up.
Andrew Mangiapane – LW/C, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 13 | 7 | 7 | 14 | 8 | 10 | 7 | 42.92 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
On the IR. Once he clears, he’s likely headed back down to Stockton.
Mitchell Mattson – C/LW, Michigan State, NCAA (Big 10)
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 6 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |

MSU played this week, but Mattson didn’t. Recurring theme.
Adam Ollas Mattsson – D, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 30 | 3 | 6 | 9 | 6 | 5 | 3 | 11.96 |
Change from last week | 5 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 0 | +0.8 |
A goal and an assist for AOM, who continues to make a strong case for an ELC.
Andrew Nielsen – D, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 16 | 0 | 5 | 5 | 3 | 3 | 2 | 12.45 |
Change from last week | 6 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | -3.49 |
Cooling off after a hot start with the Heat.
Mathias Emilio Pettersen – C/LW, Denver Pioneers, NCAA (NCHC)
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 16 | 5 | 12 | 15 | 7 | 10 | 4 | 38.25 |
Change from last week | 4 | 0 | 3 | 3 | 2 | 2 | 1 | -0.32 |
Back in action, and still racking up the points. Obviously, he was never going to keep up the 2.0 PPG pace he started the season with, but I’m curious to see how he’ll finish heading into the NCAA hockey stretch.
Matthew Phillips – RW, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 29 | 9 | 10 | 19 | 6 | 7 | 6 | 26.11 |
Change from last week | 6 | 4 | 6 | 10 | 0 | 0 | 0 | +10.52 |
To bring it back to what I said about Foo earlier, Phillips has completely usurped him for Stockton. It’s impressive that Phillips has stepped up for Stockton, especially with the roster uncertainty and injuries they’ve piled up among their forwards. Phillips was definitely going to take time to acclimate to the pros, but he appears to be further along than what we thought. Contingent on him keeping up the torrid pace, however.
Brett Pollock – LW/C, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 27 | 2 | 8 | 10 | 7 | 6 | 4 | 14.76 |
Change from last week | 5 | 2 | 2 | 4 | 2 | 4 | 2 | +3.89 |
Pollock has also stepped up. He may be further away than Phillips, but positive development is positive development. He started heating up around this point last year, so maybe he’s finally found his form.
Martin Pospisil – C/LW, Sioux City Musketeers, USHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 22 | 11 | 23 | 34 | 18 | 26 | 12 | 38.67 |
Change from last week | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
At the WJC! He only has an assist through four games, but he has been getting under the skin of his opponents.
Rushan Rafikov – D, Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, KHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 35 | 3 | 6 | 9 | 6 | 6 | 5 | 16.95 |
Change from last week | 6 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -1.23 |
Played six games, picked up an assist.
Milos Roman – C, Vancouver Giants, WHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 30 | 16 | 13 | 29 | 12 | 25 | 8 | 23.94 |

Also at the WJC. Has two goals and an assist.

Picked up where he left off in Stockton.
Filip Sveningsson – LW, IK Oskarshamn, Allsvenskan
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 25 | 9 | 9 | 18 | 8 | 13 | 7 | 35.19 |

At the WJC. No points in three games. He’s playing through illness, however, as he missed Sweden’s most recent game.
Eetu Tuulola – RW, HPK, SM-Liiga
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 36 | 6 | 14 | 20 | 8 | 13 | 6 | 20.59 |
Change from last week | 4 | 0 | 3 | 3 | 0 | 1 | 0 | -0.41 |
After a few silent weeks from Tuulola, he bounced back with three assists in his last two games, all coming on the powerplay.
Rinat Valiev – D, Stockton Heat
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 23 | 0 | 5 | 5 | 3 | 2 | 2 | 8.66 |
Change from last week | 2 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | +2.97 |
Valiev picked up two assists, and then got hurt.
Dmitri Zavgorodniy – C/LW, Rimouski Oceanic, QMJHL
GP | G | A | P | 5v5 P | P1 | 5v5 P1 | NHLe
Up to date | 37 | 19 | 23 | 42 | 23 | 30 | 17 | 28.08 |
Change from last week | 3 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | -1.64 |
Just an assist from Zavgorodniy this week.
Jon Gillies – G, Stockton Heat
GP | TOI | SV% | |
Up to date | 22 | 1135 | 0.865 |
Change from last week | 4 | 210 | +0.004 |
He had a mixed week. Started off stellar with a 0.929 SV% against Bakersfield, followed it up with two stinkers against Iowa and Tucson (0.822, 0.815 respectively) and finished with a relief appearance shutout on 14 shots.
Mason McDonald – G, Kansas City Mavericks
GP | TOI | SV% | |
Up to date | 12 | 674 | 0.907 |
Change from last week | 1 | 60 | +0.006 |
Played in one game this week (0.967 SV%) after a brief disappearance. Might be injured, because Nick Schneider hasn’t been playing well yet hasn’t received the hook in any of his games.
Tyler Parsons – G, Stockton Heat
GP | TOI | SV% | |
Up to date | 6 | 304 | 0.880 |
Change from last week | 3 | 138 | +0.049 |
Has had a really stellar return for Stockton. Nearly shut out Iowa (0.969 SV%) and had an exceptional 39-save performance against Tucson (0.951 SV%). He did crumple against San Jose on New Year’s Eve, allowing six before getting pulled midway through the second (0.806 SV%). His defence didn’t help a lot, allowing 31 shots by about the halfway mark of the game.
Nick Schneider – G, Kansas City Mavericks
GP | TOI | SV% | |
ECHL Up to date | 10 | 602 | 0.894 |

AHL Up to date | 11 | 220.16 | 0.922 |

Schneider has the starter’s net in KC, but hasn’t been doing too well. He’s allowed three or more goals in each of his appearances this week.
