The Calgary Flames acquired a pair of veteran NHL forwards in their Friday afternoon trade frenzy, and we now know what jersey numbers they’ll wear with their new team.
It remains to be seen whether Ryan Strome and Victor Olofsson will be in the lineup for Calgary against the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night. Nevertheless, the Flames have confirmed that when they make their debuts, they’ll be wearing No. 22 and No. 95, respectively.
The Flames traded a future seventh-round pick to the Anaheim Ducks to acquire Strome, who is under contract through the end of next season at a $5 million cap hit. The 32-year-old right-shot centre will become the first Flames player to wear No. 22 since Jakob Pelletier; he previously wore No. 16 with the Ducks.
Shortly thereafter, the Flames acquired Olofsson from the Colorado Avalanche as part of the return for Nazem Kadri. Olofsson, 30, is something of a “rental” for the Flames, as he is only signed through the end of this season at a $1.575 million cap hit; in effect, he was included in the trade to help make the money work. He’ll be the first player to wear No. 95 in Flames history, having previously worn thet number with Colorado and the Vegas Golden Knights.
Given the strong market for veteran centres ahead of this year’s trade deadline, it tracks that Strome could become a relatively valuable chip for the Flames next year if he can rebound from a difficult season in Anaheim. The 897-game NHL veteran has recorded just three goals and nine points in 33 games with the Ducks this season.
Olofsson, meanwhile, will likely just play out the string with the Flames this season, especially considering how many other wingers the team has on its roster who are signed beyond this year. The 5’11” Swede recorded 11 goals and 25 points in 60 games with the Avalanche this season; during his peak years with the Buffalo Sabres, Olofsson reached the 20-goal mark on three separate occasions.
In total, the Flames made three trades on deadline day:
- Kadri to Colorado for Olofsson, Max Curran, a conditional 2028 first-round pick, and a conditional 2027 second-round pick
- A 2027 seventh-round pick to Anaheim for Strome
- Jacob Battaglia to the New York Rangers for Brennan Othmann
Strome, Olofsson, and fellow acquisition Olli Maatta are all expected to play their first games with the Flames in the very near future. With 21 games remaining in their 2025-26 schedule, the Flames currently sit in 31st place in the NHL with a 24-30-7 record and 55 points.
