@Jacob Markstrom has eight shutouts in 34 games this season. No other NHL goaltender has more than four.
The 31-year-old stopped all 28 shots he faced in the Calgary Flames’ 6–0 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday. Markstrom now has as many shutouts in 2021–22 as he had in his first 315 career games with the Flames, Vancouver Canucks, and Florida Panthers prior to this season.
@Jack Campbell of the Toronto Maple Leafs and @Ilya Sorokin of the New York Islanders currently sit in a tie for second in the NHL with four shutouts, each. @Marc-Andre Fleury, @Connor Hellebuyck, @Tristan Jarry, @Igor Shesterkin, and @Ilya Samsonov all have three.
Markstrom is nearing the Flames’ franchise single-season record for most shutouts (10, set by Miikka Kiprusoff in 2005–06) and could challenge the modern-day NHL record in that category.

If Markstrom takes part in at least 34 of the #Flames last 40 games & continues his pace of shutouts in 23.5% of his appearances made, he would set an NHL single season high for SO since offensive zone forward passing became legal in 1929 (Current mark: 15- Tony Esposito, '69-70)

The Flames improved to 24–13–6 on the season with the victory. While their 54 points rank fourth in the Pacific, their .628 points percentage leads the division (and places 11th in the NHL).
Markstrom has now recorded the following shutouts in 2021–22:
  • Oct. 21 @ Detroit (33 saves)
  • Oct. 28 @ Pittsburgh (45 saves)
  • Oct. 30 vs. Philadelphia (20 saves)
  • Nov. 6 vs. NY Rangers (22 saves)
  • Nov. 18 @ Buffalo (27 saves)
  • Jan. 26 @ Columbus (23 saves)
  • Jan. 29 vs. Vancouver (15 saves)
  • Feb. 9 vs. Vegas (28 saves)
@Andrew Mangiapane scored twice for Calgary in Wednesday’s victory, with @Johnny Gaudreau, @Mikael Backlund, @Elias Lindholm, and @Matthew Tkachuk also finding the back of the net. The Flames have now won four consecutive games.
It remains to be seen whether Markstrom will man the pipes once again when the Flames return to action against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday. Wednesday’s game was Markstrom’s 10th consecutive start; backup Dan Vladar has only made 11 appearances this season, most recently winning in relief of Markstrom against the Dallas Stars on Feb. 1.
