The Calgary Flames have made their first selection of the second day of the 2024 NHL Draft. At 41st overall, the Flames have selected forward Andrew Basha from the Western Hockey League’s Medicine Hat Tigers.
A Calgary product – he played in Glenlake growing up – Basha ia a left shot winger listed at 6’0″ and 187 pounds. This past season, his third with the Tigers, he had 30 goals and 55 assists for 85 points in 63 games. His teammate Cayden Lindstrom might have drawn more draft attention – and rightfully so, Lindstrom rules – but Basha turned a lot of heads with his play during the season. Scouts often came to Tigers games to watch Lindstrom, but came away with a lot of enthusiasm about Basha, too.
Here’s what Daily Faceoff’s Steven Ellis had to say in his final rankings – he had Basha 28th:
Basha had a tremendous year with Medicine Hat, picking up the slack while Lindstrom was injured. He finished the regular season with 30 goals and 85 points in 63 games, building upon a campaign that saw him post one of the best goal totals of any Draft-1 players in the CHL last year. He won’t blow you away in the NHL with his skill, but he brings good energy and is strong defensively. Basha’s hockey sense will take him far, and his ability to play a variety of different roles helps, too.
Basha was listed as the 26th-ranked North American skater by the NHL’s Central Scouting Service, and Elite Prospects had him listed at 18th overall in their draft guide.
The watchword for Basha is “pace.” He’s developed a reputation among NHL scouts as a player who works very hard and really drives play, which really helps elevate both his own game and the games of his teammates. He’s an absolute ball of energy on the ice and Medicine Hat fans have raved about him over the past few seasons. We’ll see how he fits into the Flames’ system.
