FlamesNation Prospect Update: Playing out the stretch

Three Flames games left, six Stockton games left. AHL prospects are heading up to take the spots of the injured and kind of injured, getting a premature audition for a team with zero meaningful games left. CHL kids are slowly making their way to Stockton as they are eliminated, filling the Heat roster right back up and potentially getting acclimated to the scenery (potentially) awaiting them next year. It’s an interesting time indeed.

Oliver Kylington was also there, but in the press box as he was an emergency recall. Then he was “sent down” and recalled again, as Michael Stone’s family added another kid to the household.

On a bit of a cold streak.

Dillon Dube – C/LW, Kelowna Rockets, WHL/Stockton Heat, AHL

Dube’s playoff performance did not go as planned. He was uncharacteristically troublesome, earning two ejections in the four games (back to back games, too), one for kneeing and one for charging the goaltender. The kneeing penalty is pretty clear cut and reckless, but likely not intentional (he was not suspended for the hit). Here is the offending play on the goaltender charge. Not as dramatic as an ejection, and Jake Bean pushes him to some extent, but rules are rules I guess.

When he wasn’t in the locker room, Dube was fighting hard to keep his team alive. He scored two goals in game four, both of which tied the game at the time.

I’m excited to see what he can do in Stockton. He should join the team in time for their Wednesday game. Given that the Heat are on bare bones, he might slot in, but I’d understand if he didn’t.

Zach Fischer – RW, Spokane Chiefs, WHL

Still sitting at two points through six playoff games. Spokane will play a decisive game seven tonight against the Portland Winterhawks.

Just played a game before jetting off to Calgary. Pretty sweet that he got to make his debut against his hometown team that he spurned to sign with the Flames. Would’ve been poetic if this pass wasn’t a little behind:

Glenn Gawdin – C/RW, Swift Current Broncos, WHL

Gawdin and the Broncos survived a scare from the Regina Pats (who are going to the Memorial Cup anyways so they didn’t really have to try) in last night’s game seven thanks to a clutch, first star performance from the kid himself, picking up a goal and an assist. Gawdin currently has 11 points through seven games.

D’Artagnan Joly – RW, Baie-Comeau Drakkar, QMJHL/Stockton Heat, AHL

The Drakkar were eliminated in five by the powerhouse Halifax Mooseheads. Joly lead his team in scoring with six assists, all primary, and all but one of them coming at 5v5. For perspective, Baie-Comeau only scored 10 goals throughout the series, and only had six 5v5 goals. That would mean that Joly was involved in 60% of all goals, and 83.33% of all 5v5 goals. That’s pretty good.

Perhaps being in Stockton will allow him to grab a bigger chunk of the spotlight. He’s been quietly great on a very bad team. Perhaps being with higher quality players will benefit him. We’ll wait and see.

Given that there’s now no one left in Stockton, the burden of providing offence has fallen to Klimchuk. He took the reins readily, scoring a goal and an assist this week.

How unfortunate for Michael Stone that he would take a paternal leave when Oliver Kylington stands to be one of those in the running to take his job next season.

Linus Lindstrom – C/LW, Skelleftea AIK, SHL

Playoff hero Linus Lindstrom is back at it again, picking up another assist this past week as Skelleftea closed out their series against Farjestad (Hakan Loob’s team). That’s three points in six playoff games for Linus, who had four points in 41 games this season.

Matthew Phillips – C/RW, Victoria Royals, WHL

The Royals forced a game seven against the Vancouver Giants, mostly thanks to Matthew being a one man army.

In the game six OT victory, Philips had two goals and two assists, contributing to every goal in the 4-3 victory.

I could fill the entire column space with his highlights just from these playoffs alone. Kid is a monster. He is currently tied for second in WHL playoff scoring with 13 points in six games. Victoria takes on Vancouver again tonight for the series.

Ruzicka and the Sting advanced past the Memorial Cup defending Windsor Spitfires in six games. Ruzicka only had two assists throughout the proceedings.

Smith is recovering from an upper body injury. He hasn’t played since Jan. 6.

Filip Sveningsson – LW, HV71, Superelit/SHL

Good news for Sveningsson! The 2017 seventh round pick led his HV71 U20 team to the Swedish championship, scoring the overtime game-winning goal himself:

Sveningsson led his team in playoff scoring with 10 points in six games. He’s a pretty good player, and I’m interested to see what he can do in the SHL next year.

Juuso Valimaki – D, Tri-City Americans, WHL

Unlike Dube, Valimaki had a great time with the Tri-City vs. Kelowna series. He picked up four points in the four games.

Parsons started twice for Kansas City, stopping 32 of 38 (.842 SV%) in his first game but 32 of 34 (.941 SV%) in his second.

Rittich put up some stinkers in his return to Stockton, getting yanked against Cleveland after allowing five goals in the second period (16 of 21, .762 SV%) and following that up with another bad game against San Antonio (18 of 22, .818 SV%). He did redeem himself by stopping 26 of 27 (.963 SV%) against San Antonio, but given that his NHL numbers are pretty shaky, it seems really, really bad that he can’t grab ahold of himself at the AHL level. His North American career is on the line if he can’t find his groove again.
